Despite being just twenty-one, Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey has turned the heads of some impressive people, Billie Eilish included. Her smooth alt-pop sound is a charming, refreshing break from the darkness and moody atmosphere of most modern pop, instead going for something forward-thinking and uplifting: ‘It’s funny cause you drive me half insane, a universe without you would thoroughly mundane, there’s no one else I’d rather fall in love with, and that is my best friend in the world’. Her background in classical music and jazz comes through in her rich harmonies, textural left-turns and impressive compositional direction. ‘Best Friend’ is the lead single from her upcoming EP, Typical Of Me, and shines a light on the unique sound she is developing. -Dan Peeke
